How to Program a Genie Garage Door Remote

Ready to start using your new garage door opener? Before you dive in, you’ll need to know how to program your Genie garage door remote.

How to Program Your Genie Garage Door Remote

Programming your Genie remote will depend on the model of remote you have as well as the opener you have. Use these instructions to get the job done.

Genie Three-Button Remotes

  • Press the “Program/Set” button and hold it until both LED lights turn on.
  • Release that button and you should see the round blue LED stay on while the long LED turns off.
  • Press and release the “Program/Set” button and you should see the long purple LED begin to flash.
  • Press and release the button you want to program and the long purple LED will stop flashing and stay on.
  • Press and release that remote button again. Both LEDs will flash and turn off.
  • Press and release that remote button a third time, completing the programming process.

Genie One-Button Remote

The programming process for this remote is different depending on whether your opener has a “Learn Code” button or whether it has a “Program/Set” button.

For a “Learn” button, follow these steps:

  • Remove the protective battery film from the bottom of the remote.
  • Press and release the “Learn Code” button on your opener, and you should see the red LED start flashing.
  • Press and release the button on your remote that you want to program. The red LED on your opener should stop flashing and stay on.
  • Press the remote button again. You’ll see the red LED will turn off.
  • Press the remote button a third time to complete the programming process.

If your opener has a “Program/Set” button, follow these steps instead:

  • Remove the battery’s protective film from the remote.
  • Press and hold the “Program/Set” button on your opener until the round LED lights up blue.
  • Release the “Program/Set” button and you should see the long LED flash purple.
  • Press and release the button on your remote that you want to program. The purple LED on your garage door opener should stop flashing and stay on.
  • Press and release the remote button again and both LEDs should flash blue and then turn off.
  • Press and release the remote button a third time to complete the programming process.

GenieMaster 31T BX

Programming this remote will depend on the type of opener you have: either an Intellicode 1, Intellicode 2, or an opener with code switches.

For an Intellicode 1 opener, use these instructions:

  • Press and release the “Learn Code” button on your garage door opener. The “Learn Code” LED should start flashing.
  • Press and release the remote button you want to program. The “Learn Code” LED should stop flashing and stay on.
  • Press the same remote button and the LED should turn off.
  • Press the remote button a third time to complete the programming.

If you have an Intellicode 2 opener, follow these steps:

  • Press and hold the remote button you want to program for ten seconds. You’ll see a red LED turn on and after ten seconds, you’ll see a green LED turn on. At that point, release the button.
  • Press and release the same button twice. Both LEDs on the remote will turn off.
  • Press the same button again. This will light up the green LED.
  • Press and hold the “Program/Set” button on your opener until the round blue LED lights up – about two seconds. Release that button, at which time the blue LED will turn off and the long purple LED will light up.
  • Press and release the remote button you want to program.
  • Press the remote button again and both LEDs will turn off.
  • Press the remote button one more time to complete the programming.

Finally, if your opener uses code switches, follow these instructions:

  • Open the light lens on your opener to see its row of code switches.
  • Remove the rear cover from your remote.
  • Set the code switches’ positions in the remote to match the switches’ positions in your opener. The remote has 12 switches so if your opener only has nine, the last three switches should be in the “0” position (not up or down but in the middle).
  • Inside the rear cover, press the non-rolling code button (B, C, or D) that matches the code switch description on the label. The yellow LED will start flashing.
  • Press and release the remote button you want to program and you’ll see the green LED flash for a few seconds and turn off.
  • Press the same button again to complete the programming.
